Searching the World Wide Web

To search for something on the World Wide Web or Internet, try using our Search Engines  link page . Chose one of the popular search engines there to find something of interest to you.  To make your search efficient there are some techniques you can use.

Remember your search instructions are going to a computer assisted by software not to a person so use a  library index approach to your search.

A search using the word Book will probably give you thousands of web sites to look through and chose from but if you narrow the search you might get what you want quickly.

A search using the words Football Book  will give thousands of sites on Books, Football and Football Books from all over the world.

You can narrow the search to the U.K. either by including uk in the key word description or by choosing the .co.uk version of the search engine instead of .com, i.e. www.yahoo.co.uk

Use  + (plus sign) to include a word in a search.  To exclude a word use -(minus sign). Use of " " (inverted comas) will restrict the search to only sites that include all the words inside the inverted comas.

For example, to search for a book written by a football manager, try the following.

"bobby robson"   this will give you several sites including books, news items and other web site pages where Bobby Robson's name is mentioned.

or

"book, ferguson+life"   this should get you access to sites that only offer or mention Alex Ferguson's book with the word 'life' in the title i.e. his book title - 'Managing My Life'.

The different search engines and browsers act differently so do not expect the same results from each. It is worth taking the tutorial that your search engine offers you if you experience difficulties in finding what you are looking for.

Note the Internet is not generally case sensitive so for searches and web site addresses you can use lower case letters.

The internet does not like spaces so make sure you do not include any spaces when typing a web address.

To learn more about the internet, searching and surfing, try a visit to the BBC's WebWise page on their web site @ www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/

We hope the above points have provided some help and we wish you success with your surfing of our web site and the World Wide Web!
